The Department’s History
The existence of Seni Karawitan Program of Study ISI Denpasar is integrated with the establishment of Akademi Seni Tari Indonesia (ASTI) Denpasar in 1967 by the Local Government of Bali Province. Karawitan Department was started in 1978 when in that time its graduates got Bachelor of Arts diploma. As an independent Department, Karawitan Department was formally formed in 1988 during the change of status from ASTI to Sekolah Tinggi Seni Indonesia (ISI) Denpasar, with the Decree of Education and Culture Minister No. 0445/0/1988, followed by Decree of President of Republic of Indonesia No. 22 year 1992. ISI Denpasar was established based on the Decree of President of Republic of Indonesia No. 33 year 2003 dated 26 May 2003, was the integration of ISI Denpasar with Seni Rupa and Desain Program of Study (PSSRD) Udayana University. To date, Karawitan Department has graduated 262 Sarjana Seni. The students at Karawitan Department are not only coming from Bali, they are also coming from other parts of Indonesia and also from other countries, such as from USA, England, Japan, Mexico and Hungary.
The Balinese karawitan arts have been nationally and internationally famous. The richness of gamelan types (36 types) in Bali has been giving the opportunity to the existence and activities of ISI Denpasar to promote its interactions in arts. The Balinese arts and cultures that are very dynamic and flexible toward the development of global cultures is the main asset to the development of Karawitan Department and ISI Denpasar.
The existence of ISI Denpasar has been giving a huge contribution to the tourism sector in Bali. Bali’s socio-cultural atmosphere as one of main cultural tourism destinations is very synergic with the existence of Karawitan Department as a high institution with its idealism to preserve and develop the arts of Bali. The reality of globalization and tourism industry are the environment and work market that are widely open for the artists of Karawitan Department .
The socio-religious Balinese society has always been an integral part of the art and cultural expressions. In the context of religious society life, the ceremony is not complete without involving dances, music, puppet shows and other visual arts expressions. The integrity between religion and arts in Bali is one of the main reasons the conduciveness of arts preservation and development in Bali.
As one form of Balinese arts, karawitan has a close relation to the ritual functions. Karawitan also performs as the aesthetic media for Balinese society. Its role as the aesthetic reflection and expression can be seen in many art expression using the karawitan art media, both in form of music instrumental and karawitan vocal.
In Balinese tourism industry, karawitan art together with other performing arts play important roles to preserve the image of Balinese cultures. Performing arts has been a very dominant culture in Balinese tourism industry. This reality has been giving open opportunities to the Karawitan Department graduates in their competition in local and global job market.
The Karawitan Department graduates are enthusiastically accepted by Balinese society itself; even they have been accommodated nationally and internationally. Among Balinese society, the alumni of Karawitan Department are always be the leaders in preserving and developing Balinese cultures. The Karawitan Department graduates have shown their dedication in many events and sectors. Internationally, they have been very active involving in many art collaborations, giving seminars and workshops, guest speakers, and local staff in many Indonesian representative offices overseas.
The Development of Karawitan Departemen in the late 5 years
Referring to the institution development plan, Karawitan Department as the center of research and creation of karawitan arts, indicating there are many programs that have achieved the aims. Generally, the development at Karawitan Department in these last five years has emphasized to nationally and internationally increase the academic quality, and promoting the roles of Karawitan Department , locally, nationally and globally.
The Received Funding
To date (2006), the one and only funding that has been achieved by Karawitan Department was Due-Like Batch IV Program that was a Competitive Funding Program of Directorate General of Higher Education year 2003. The implementation of Due-Like programs and activities brought significant impacts toward the existence of Karawitan Department in performing Tri Darma Perguruan Tinggi. Through the programs, Karawitan Department was able to promote the quality of its human resources through Degree and Non-Degree Programs to encourage a conducive academic atmosphere. The socialization of mutual interdependent between campus and society through this funding program, resulting in increased student roll, which before was dominated three regencies in Bali (Denpasar, Gianyar and Badung), now has been attended by all regencies in Bali.
Long Term Development Plan
To be able to give continuous, high quality educational services, ISI Denpasar implements the educational management that always refers to the policy of Directorate General of Higher Education, job market opportunities and independent art education development. Karawitan Department is one of the departments under Faculty of Arts Performance; wish to make Karawitan Department, in accordance with its Vision, as the center of creation and study of karawitan arts, cultural based development of science and technology and be able to actively play the roles in the local, national and international development.
To release academic art practitioners of karawitan arts, who are idealistically and widely described through preservation, development and study with concentration on Balinese karawitan arts and Indonesian ethnic music.
Preparing students who have academic ability and/or able to create knowledge and technology.
Promoting and expanding the knowledge, technology and the karawitan arts and encouraging its use to promote society life and enrich local and national cultures.
To be able to solve problems described as the expertise or skills in solving problems.
Releasing graduates who are able to implement their academic and professional skills, responsible widely in the creation and study of arts.
Preparing and motivating the academic staff to increase their academic qualifications by continuing their education to higher level (S2 and S3), short courses (job trainings), attending seminars, and expressing their ideas and thoughts in form of journal writings, in regional, national or international level, conducting continuous study and researches and performing services to the society that is relevant to the needs so that it would be able to promote the quality of learning and graduates.
Giving more opportunities to the students to participate in researches and services to the society, to promote the skills in art study and implementing their knowledge in their society.
Completing the curriculum of karawitan art education in line with the development of science and technology and society needs.
Providing sufficient facilities to support the process of teaching and learning.
Based on the vision, mission, purposes, strategy and objectives of Karawitan Department mentioned above, the long term development plan refers to the Higher Education Long Term Strategy, HELT) 2003-2010 which is directed to promote the national capability to compete, that is national integration where art education is directed to offer cross-subject, cross-cultural, cross-regional and cross-national arts, educational and research programs. Besides that, in line with the globalization era, Karawitan Department in its development is directed to conduct international education. For that, Karawitan Department always strives to create more conducive academic atmosphere and several main programs will be gradually and continuously organized. The descriptions of long-term programs are implemented into the following programs:
Promoting the academic staff quality in researches, study and creation of arts.
Releasing competent graduates who are ready to compete in job market as needed by the stakeholders.
Creating academic climate that is oriented to the development of science and arts.
